I began my journey as the Queen of the Side Hustle. Let’s see, my side hustles included: Princess House and Avon, twice each. There was also a stint with Tupperware, selling earrings, modeling, image consulting, medical services, beauty pageant and fashions show production. There may have been others, but these are the ones I remember. All the while working full time as an analyst for the State of California and being a mother to my son.
A heart attack at my desk, at age 36, convinced me that working for the state was not how I wanted to spend my life. My son and I deserved a better life.
This was the mantra my dear friend and I would declare to each other on each New Year’s Day. We were determined and meant what we said, but this went on for a few years.
When it happened, I made $50,000 in three months! The year was 2003. The business was Kids First Conflict Resolution and Training Services. Kids First provides anger management, anti-bullying peer mediation, and conflict resolution services and training for schools, parents, churches, and communities.
All was well, until 2010. The economy was in a bad place and schools just didn’t have the funds to invest in consultants. Although the kids still needed our services, there was no one willing or able to write the check.
